The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria issued a one-week ultimatum to all airlines with abandoned and unserviceable aircraft at any of the nation’s major airports to remove them.
FAAN’s Director of Airport Operations Mr. Henry Omoegwu, who issued the ultimatum at the main gateway Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, said the aircraft were constituting a threat to security and safety at the airports. ”There will be no extension, we have asked the contractors to clear the mess. We have given statutory notices to the owners of the aircraft to take them away because they are eating up space at the airport,” Omoegwu said.
Most of the aircraft belong to defunct airlines and included Boeing, Embraer, Fokker 28 and DC 8 airplanes.
For the past 10 years, FAAN has tried without success to get the abandoned aircraft removed from the premises of the major airports.
