Puerto Rico Air National Guard Plane Crashes in Savannah

A Puerto Rico Air National Guard C-130 “Hercules” crashed and burst into flames Wednesday near the Savannah Hilton Head International Airport with 5 people on board.

At least five people were killed in the crash, a Georgia Air National Guard spokesman told the media.

The Puerto Rico Air National Guard is the air force militia of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. It is, along with the Puerto Rico Army National Guard and the Puerto Rico State Guard, an element of the Puerto Rico National Guard.

As commonwealth militia units, the units in the Puerto Rico Air National Guard are not in the normal United States Air Force chain of command. They are under the jurisdiction of the Governor of Puerto Rico through the office of the Puerto Rico Adjutant General unless they are federalized by order of the President of the United States.

The US National Guard said in Twitter: “Personnel are on the scene responding. A board of officers will investigate the accident”.
