Loganair, Scotland’s Airline, has announced that it will move essential air services between Dundee and London to London City Airport from 29 March 2020.
The route, currently operated to Stansted Airport, is supported by a Public Service Obligation (PSO) which protects routes that boost tourism, connect the UK and encourage economic growth. It is backed by funding from the UK Government, Transport Scotland and Dundee City Council.
In October the Department for Transport announced the PSO was renewed for another two years, with Loganair again chosen by Dundee City Council to operate flights from Dundee Airport to Stansted and back 11 times per week.
Today’s announcement means the route to the UK’s capital will now be operated to London City instead of Stansted from late March. The new route will be served by two flights in each direction every weekday and one on Sundays.
New aircraft will also be introduced to the service, with an ATR 42-500 replacing the Saab 340 presently deployed. This will increase seat capacity from 33 to 48 seats on every flight. The new aircraft is also more environmentally efficient, cutting carbon emissions per passenger by around 30% versus the Saab 340 aircraft flying the route today.

London City Airport is only 10 minutes from Canary Wharf and 30 minutes from Central London, making it ideal for both business and leisure travelers. Dundee West MP Chris Law said:
“Flights from Dundee to London City Airport are an important piece of the jigsaw in terms of bringing investment and employment to our local area in the future, and I am delighted as the local Member of Parliament that these flights will return.
“It was a real loss to our local area when the route was lost over five years ago. Earlier this year I launched my campaign to bring the flights back, and this has had enormous support from the people and businesses of Dundee and the surrounding area. Dundee has an increasing national and international reputation as a great place to live, work and visit, and I am sure our city can look forward to welcoming more people than ever before.”
Loganair also today announced the introduction of a Dundee-Belfast City service, the first between the two cities since the end of a previous Loganair service in 2012. Flights will take off from Thursday 2 April and will operate up to six times each week (daily except Saturdays) during the summer season and three times each week during the winter season.
