South African Airways Says Normal Operations Continue

South African Airways A340

South African Airways is maintaining operations for the time being, despite apparent increasing uncertainty over the ailing flag carrier’s financing.

A spokesperson said the airline aware of media reports suggesting that it will cease operations. “South African Airways is always committed to transparently communicate with all stakeholders, including customers, about any material or significant operational changes that may have an impact on flight schedules.”

South African Airways is undergoing a business rescue process and had been due to receive R2 billion in funding from the South African government as well as a further R2 billion from lenders. But the status of this funding program is currently unclear.

The South African government said it’s working on solutions for the national airline after failing to pay 2 billion rands ($138 million) in funding by a Sunday deadline.

“Where there may be flight schedule amendments, such operational changes will be managed and communicated in accordance with the industry norms and practices”, the airline said in a statement.
