WOW air adds seven new Airbus aircraft to its fleet to service Irish routes

WOW air, Iceland’s low-cost airline, will add seven new Airbus aircraft to its rapidly growing fleet by the end of 2018, bringing its total number of aircraft to 24.

With routes commencing from Ireland (Dublin and Cork) to Miami, Pittsburgh and Chicago via the Icelandic capital Reykjavik, WOW air will operate an all-Airbus fleet of 17 aircraft across its 32 international routes in Europe and North America by mid-2017. The additional seven aircraft, which boast the lowest fuel burn, emissions and noise footprint in their class, will be delivered over the next 18 months.

Commenting, Skúli Mogensen, CEO of WOW air, said:

“We are proud to be able to offer our passengers one of the youngest fleets in the world. The addition of these new aircraft will help us grow in an increasingly competitive market and fly further than ever before.

“These new aircraft will be deployed as WOW air continues to add new services and routes across its growing route network on both sides of the Atlantic, offering a capacity increase of 50 percent.”

Among the new additions will be four brand news Airbus A330-900neo widebody aircraft on a 12-year lease from CIT Aerospace International. The A330-900neo, the newest member of the Airbus widebody family, includes new generation Rolls Royce Trent 7000 engines and aerodynamic enhancements that, in combination, offer a 14 percent reduction in fuel consumption per seat, making it the most cost-effective medium-range widebody aircraft on the market.

WOW air will operate the aircraft with a single class cabin holding 365 seats, including 42 that are broader and offer additional legroom. The aircraft, which has a list price of US$291 million per model, has a range of 9,750km, meaning it could fly non-stop to Hong Kong or Honolulu from WOW air’s base in Iceland.

Two Airbus A321ceo aircraft will also be among the new fleet additions, with one purchased directly from Airbus and the other leased from Air Lease Corporation (ALC).
