flybe confirms new international route from Dundee to Amsterdam

Flybe has today (25th February 2016) confirmed details of a new year round service between Dundee and Amsterdam Schiphol Airports that will operate six times a week as part of its 2016 Summer schedule, with travel effective from 23rd May, 2016.

This is the third route Flybe has announced under the UK Government’s Regional Air Connectivity Fund and residents of Dundee now have the opportunity to travel direct from regional Scotland to this key European city and major global transport hub for the comparable cost of a standard train ticket to Glasgow.

UK Aviation Minister Robert Goodwill said: “It is fantastic to see Flybe launch this new service between Dundee and Amsterdam, giving the Scottish city its first international route. Our smaller airports are vital engines for local economies, connecting the UK and overseas destinations and opening up opportunities. That is why the UK Government is backing new regional air routes with £7m of funding to drive investment and boost growth across the country.”

Vincent Hodder, Flybe’s Chief Revenue Officer added: “We are pleased to be the first airline to provide Dundee travellers with this crucial international air link. It  is a another example of our ongoing commitment to strengthening our position as the airline of choice for customers who have a need for travel but live in areas not well served by other airlines.”

Inglis Lyon, Managing Director of Dundee Airport operator HIAL, said: “We are delighted that Flybe’s new Dundee to Amsterdam route is now on sale. This has been a priority target for Dundee Airport for some time and we are grateful to our partners Dundee City Council and Transport Scotland for their support, and to Flybe for showing confidence in Dundee. This is a significant milestone for the airport and the city. It gives Dundee its first international route as well as access to one of Europe’s biggest and best connected hub airports. The new route offers business and leisure travellers fast, convenient links to hundreds of destinations worldwide and, crucially, creates new opportunities for inward investment and inbound tourism at an exciting time for the city. With the support of the people of Dundee and Tayside, I believe this route could be transformational for the city and its airport.”

Commenting further, Minister for Transport and Islands Derek Mackay added: “This is really exciting news for Dundee and I congratulate everyone involved with bringing this new high-profile service to the city. The link to Amsterdam will bring huge benefits to Scottish businesses by improving access to global markets. Schiphol is a much sought after global hub airport, offering onward connections to hundreds of destinations around the world.  The announcement demonstrates a real confidence in Dundee Airport as well as the city, its catchment and all they have to offer.

“It will also give inbound travellers even more options when it comes to getting a taste of the fantastic tourist experience on offer in Scotland. I wish Dundee Airport and Flybe every success with this new route and look forward to it getting off the ground later this year.”
