Rex resumes flights to Mornington Island

Regional Express (Rex) will resume flights to Mornington Island airport from today under a charter substitution arrangement approved late yesterday by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

The airport has been temporarily closed to all aircraft above 5,700 kg since 16 December 2015 due to runway unserviceability. Recent runway repairs removed the runway length restriction yesterday and have enabled Rex to deploy its lighter Chieftain aircraft (operated by its subsidiary Air Link Airlines) as a shuttle service between Mornington Island and Normanton. This will allow Mornington Island passengers to connect with Rex’s Regular Public Transport (RPT) Gulf services in Normanton.

The shuttle will initially operate two returns on weekdays and Rex will work with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to closely monitor the adequacy of these services. 

This charter substitution arrangement will be in place until the full runway repair works are completed. Rex is not in a position to advise how long this is likely to take.
