Uncertainty over ongoing violence prompts airlines to halt flights to Juba

Kenya Airways and Rwandair just issued a brief statement announcing that they have suspended flights to Juba, South Sudan’s capital, as uncertainty over ongoing violence increases.

Intense fighting has resumed in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, as an increasingly tense security situation threatened to send the young country back to all-out civil war.

At least 272 people have died in fighting between South Sudan’s rival factions in the capital Juba, including 33 civilians.

The fighting broke out on Thursday and Friday between troops loyal to President Salva Kiir and soldiers who support vice president Riek Machar.

“We wish to advise our guests that we have suspended flights to Juba, South Sudan due to uncertain security situation. We will advise you when the circumstances change and thank you for your continued support”, Kenya Airways said in a statement.

“This is to inform you that our flights to and from Juba (South Sudan) have been cancelled today Sunday 10 July 2016 due to the prevailing security situation in Juba. We will closely monitor the situation and keep you informed of our flights operations to and from Juba.” Rwandair announced.
